Challenge
As one of the nation's leading cancer treatment centers, our client is also a strategic adopter of data analytics. The center uses analytics to gain new insights that continuously improve treatment and inform mission-critical business and clinical decisions. True to its proactive approach, leadership wanted an organizational structure that would make the most of its analytical data and tools going forward. The center engaged Point B to take analytics to the next level across the organization and to help create the conditions for the successful launch of an advanced data visualization tool, Tableau.
Creating a Three-Year Roadmap
- Point B brought together key stakeholders in a series of workshops to:
- Identify strategic analytic needs.
- Highlight capacity gaps.
- Define an organizational structure for business intelligence (BI) excellence.
We began by examining current capabilities in light of future-state goals. What were the most important business and clinical questions to be answered in order to succeed? What organizational model would best support them? Our assessment culminated in a three-year BI and analytics roadmap that aligns the center's Clinical Analytics Team with the evolving analytic needs of the organization in the near term.
Enabling Tableau Adoption
With stakeholder buy-in and a clear roadmap, Point B helped the center create the conditions to launch Tableau successfully. We:
- Developed a data governance charter that built the organizational capability to enable high business and clinical adoption.
- Informed decision-making.
- Created clear data and key performance indicator definitions.
- Support the intake and triage of questions, requests, and issues.
- Solved a capacity forecasting problem for our client, showcasing its power to help leadership make important decisions.
The center's successful Tableau launch met its high adoption and return on investment goals. The team went from a handful of users to several hundred active users in a short time period. Tableau has come to play a central role in making strategic decisions that serve patients and run the business.
The Future is Scalable
Looking long-term, the center has engaged Point B to optimize its operating model to support the ever-increasing demand for analytics. The future operating model will increase the center's capacity and pace to respond to analytics requests and enable more self-service analytics. It will also bring unstructured data into the analytics mix, including images and physicians' notes. The goal: wider access to analytics, deeper insight, and better decisions.
Operational efficiency improved by 57 percent and inventory accuracy increased from 55 to over 98 percent.
